We have continued our learning about the circulatory system and have been using this to start planning our explanation text writing.
Earlier in the week, we were very lucky to be visited by the poet and author, Debra Bertulis. We listened to her read some of her poems and also got to create our own based on Pie Corbett's poem, If I had wings'.
The children have really enjoyed World Book Day and all looked fantastic in their costumes. We embraced our love of books and the children recreated front covers of their favourite books!
Week ending: 14th February
In maths, have been continuing to learn about fraction, decimal, percentage equivalences and in English we have been learning about conjunctive adverbs, the active and passive voice and the subjunctive form.
We have also had a great time with our DT unit. This week, we made pitta bread and hummus and also samosas: delicious! The children have been really excited by this unit and many have said they would like to cook these recipes at home; consequently, we have sent the recipes home. Please do send us photos of their home creations!
We also had some great news to celebrate. Four of our Year 6 students attended the local Year 6 English Challenge heat held at Lional Walden and they won! This means that they will be off to the finals later in the term. Congratulations!
Week Ending: 7th February
This week, we started our DT unit: Can street foods save us? We chopped, peeled, sliced and mixed a range of ingredients: coriander, carrots, mangetout, sundried peppers, kidney beans, courgette and much more. We then used these to a make a flavourful and healthy filling for our tortilla wrap burritos. They were delicious! We are looking forward to cooking again next week.
We also ended the week with a disco. The children came dressed to impress and they certainly did impress us. They had lots of fun whilst also behaving impeccably!
Week ending: 31st January
We have had another busy week! In geography, we have been learning about why settlements form where they do thinking about both human and physical features. As part of this, we also explored patterns in movements of people. We talked about voluntary migration (the Windrush) and involuntary migration (the Atlantic Slave Trade). In maths, we have been continuing to secure our knowledge of fractions. We have been adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. We continued to learn about dialogue in English and wrote the dialogue between Bess and the Highwayman. Our PE focus this term is tennis and dance. In dance, we have learned about the Haka and have been creating our own routines.
Week ending: 17th January 2025
This week, we have written an internal monologue as one of the characters from The Highwayman. They have thought carefully about using emotive language and vocabulary in keeping with the time. We have started our unit on fractions by exploring equivalent fractions and converting between mixed and improper fractions. In history, the children have enjoyed learning about the Windrush and this has also led to some very good discussions about the events. We are also reading, Windrush Child by Benjamin Zephaniah, as our class book this half term.
Week ending: 10th January
It has been lovely seeing everyone back after the Christmas break.
This week, we have been learning all about blood: what it is made up of, the importance of each component of blood, where it is made and much more. We will continue to learn more about the human circulatory over the rest of this term.
In English, we have been exploring the poem, The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. We have enjoyed learning new vocabulary and about the different poetic devices used.
