Autumn Term Curriculum Overview

Autumn Half Term round up!

What a wonderful start to year 5 all the children have had! We have thoroughly enjoyed our first half term, as I'm sure you have discovered at parents evenings!

We have learned so much in maths - about place value, decimal fractions, money and negative numbers! Few!

In English we have focused on sentence structure and have written a Non-Chronological report, which was really fun.

We've started to learn about the Ancient Greeks, about biomes and mixtures and solutions (History, Geography and Science). I'm not sure where we've managed to fit it all in!

In PE we have been thinking about football outside and gymnastics inside.

We just can't wait for next term to continue all the wonderful work!

Times Table Rockstars of the week:

Times Table Rockstar of the week!

Week ending 27/09/2024

This week has been another exciting one in Giraffes class!

Our English learning has taken us to think about sentence structure, thinking about compound subjects, gerunds and conjunctions. We have practiced forming sentences using these different features, with the aim of creating some amazing sentences next week when we start our first writing unit. We have also just finished The Iron Man, which we all really enjoyed!

In maths we have extended our decimal fraction learning onto measurements and thinking about how we can transfer our decimal knowledge to metres, centimetres and more!

We have now started our History unit about Ancient Greece. There is lot for us to cover so we are all very excited to get learning!

On Wednesday, we had a real treat! We had a visitor from the RI some to perform a scientific demonstration in the afternoon. There were bangs and crashes, balloon explosions and lots of excitement! Have a look at the pictures to see the fun!

Question of the week:

What is a compound subject?

This week we have been continuing our work on the place value of punctuation in English. This has involved really looking at how sentences are constructed, ensuring they have a subject and verb, plus thinking about pronouns and any ‘leftovers’!

Maths has been fun as we have started to look at hundredths! We have had the place value grids out, as well as use hundred squares to show in a practical way how to demonstrate tenths and then hundredths.

In science, we have focused on reversible and irreversible changes, looking at what happens to ice when it is left out of the freezer, what happens when you heat chocolate or bread, as well as what happens when you cook an egg…can you get it back in its shell???

Our RE learning has taken us to Hindu temples. We have learned what should be inside one and then designed our own ensuring everything is there and in the correct place.

Question of the week:

What does the Aum symbol represent?

Week ending 13/09/2024

This week we have had another jam packed week of fun!

In English, we have been thinking about verbs, verb phrases and phrasal verbs. We have learned that verb phrases consist of an auxiliary verb (to be, to have or modal) + main verb and a phrasal verb is a main verb + a particle. We had fun trying to work out the difference! We also had dictionary races!!!

In maths, we have continued to think about tenths and how to represent them. We are still using concrete resources but also now moving onto mental methods too.

In science, we have been doing lots of experiments looking at separating mixtures and thinking about the difference between mixtures and solutions.

Question of the week:

What is a mixture and what is a solution?

Week ending 06/09/2024

We have had a wonderful start to year 5! We've only been in for three days but we're crammed so much in!

In maths, we have been thinking about tenths, how to represent them, recognise them and write them. In English, we have been talking about nouns: common, proper, partative, collective and abstract! Our art lessons have been fun too. We have been doing some subtractive drawing as well as replicating the work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

Question of the week:

Can you describe what 'subtractive drawing is'?
