English

Our English curriculum is carefully planned to ensure progression of skills, as well as coverage of genres, so that the children grow up as fluent readers and writers. These skills are then applied in other subjects.

Glebelands and DLPT Picture Book Awards 2025-2026

This year, it has been very exciting as we have been able to roll out our annual Glebelands Picture Book Awards across all of the schools in out trust: the DLPT.  It has been great to have all of our schools read and share the same curated collection of picture books selected by the Norfolk Children's Book Centre. We announced Glebelands top three picture books and then we collated the votes across of all of the DLPT's schools to find the top three across the trust. We have been very fortunate to have been joined online for a whole trust assembly by the overall winning author, Neil Sharpson, who wrote the amazing 'Don't Trust Fish!' book. Neil was engaging and provided a fabulous insight into what inspired him to write 'Don't Trust Fish!'.  Some of the pupils were able to ask Neil questions too.  We are looking forward to reading his next book due to be released September 2026.

Author visit - Philip Kavvadias

We were lucky enough to be visited by the author, Philip Kavvadias. This visit was a prize awarded to Year 5 pupil Bea who entered and was a runner up in a nationwide 'Design a Dino' competition.  Philip spoke to the whole of Key Stage Two about his Microraptor book series and asked us all to help him design his next three books! Well done Bea and we look forward to reading his next creations!

Poet Visit

We have been very lucky to be visited by the very talented poet and author, Debra Bertulis.  We had a whole school assembly where Debra shared some very funny and interactive poems. She then held workshops with each year group where they focused on a different poem and used their creativity and imagination to produce some fantastic poems.  Debra even had poet envy as they were so good!

Design a Dino Competition

Lots of our KS2 pupils entered the Design a Dino competition.  They were tasked with designing a new species of dinosaur which could be used in the next book in the Microraptor series written by Philip Kavvadias.  There were so many creative and wonderful entries so well done to all those who entered.

Excitingly, one of our pupil's designs was chosen as a second place winner! Well done and congratulations to Beatrice in Year 5 for her winning entry.  We shared a video message, from the author, in our whole school assembly congratulating Beatrice on her win.  She has won a 30 minute virtual author visit and 30 copies of the Microraptor book for the school library.

Year 6 English Challenge

Four of our Year 6 students attended the local Year 6 English Challenge heat held at a nearby school.  They worked brilliantly together showcasing super teamwork and great knowledge.  We are very excited to announce that they came first in this heat.  This means that they will be heading off to the final in a few weeks' time where we are sure they will continue to showcase their fabulous team spirit!

Congratulations!

Online Author Event with Susannah Lloyd: Winner of our Glebelands Picture Book Awards 2024-2025

The winner of our picture book awards, Susannah Lloyd, kindly joined us virtually during a whole school assembly so that we could all personally congratulate her on winning.  It was an absolute pleasure to meet Susannah.  Her enthusiasm and passion for books, writing and reading really shone through.  Some of the children were able to ask Susannah questions about her books and what inspires her to write.  All of the children listened intently and were captivated by what she had to stay.

Glebelands Picture Book Awards 2024-2025

Again, the great team at Norfolk Children's Book Centre chose for us a wonderful selection of the newest picture books for this year's picture awards.  Over two weeks, each class read the books and passed them on to the next class.  There was lots of great excitement across the school and chatter about which books had been read, which ones were eagerly being waited for and also which ones were the favourites.  Each child voted for their favourite book and the winner was announced in a whole school assembly.

Chatteris Literacy Festival

Year 1 met author and illustrator, Ellie Sandall, as part of the Chatteris Literacy Festival.  She told them all about her book and showed them how to draw Bertie.  On their way to the Literacy Festival the children also walked to the library where Louise showed them lots of books and she gave them some ideas about how to choose books and showed them how to use the computer to borrow books.

Author Visit: Hannah Gold

Hannah visited Glebelands and delivered an assembly sharing information about the book she has recently written and what inspired her to write the stories.  She also hinted at the new book she was busy working on.  Her visit was thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Author Visit: Jack Meggitt-Phillips

We were very lucky to be visited by Jack Meggitt-Phillips author of The Beast and the Bethany series who provided an insight into how he writes his stories.  He also held a Q&A session and signed books.
