    Welcome to Year 4!

We are looking forward to this new academic year and to working with our new year 4 children. Here is some key information:

    Homework
This will consist of daily reading of at least 20 minutes a day at home. Please could this be recorded in your reading diary which should be brought into school every day. It would really benefit children to discuss their reading with an adult, including any new vocabulary and answering 'why' or 'how do you know' questions.

Times tables are crucially important to learning in year 4 and so these should be practised at home regularly. As part of this practise, we ask that children complete Times Table Rockstar challenges and games for at least 25 minutes a week. We would recommend they play 'Garage' until they have a good understanding of all their multiplication tables up to 12 x 12. When children are confident with all their multiplication tables, they can move on to trying to improve their speed through 'Studio'. Weekly 'Soundchecks' are also a good way of seeing where they are.

Spelling homework activities will be set regularly to practise areas we are working on in class. In addition to this, we will also let you know which 5 'tricky words' your child is working on that week at school so that they can be practised at home too.

    PE
PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please ensure that your child has a clean PE kit in school for both of these days. This should consist of shorts and a t-shirt for indoor PE lessons and a t-shirt, jogging bottoms/shorts, a warm top and a change of trainers for outdoor PE sessions. Earrings are not permitted to be worn during PE and children must be able to remove them independently. If your child can not do this by themselves, please ensure they are not wearing earrings on these days. Long hair must also be tied up.

    Healthy snacks
Please ensure that your child has a healthy snack for break time. This should consist of fruit, vegetables, cheese or healthy cereal snack bars. Please do not send in crisps, biscuits or chocolate.

Please do not hesitate to contact one of the year 4 team if you have any questions. We look forward to an exciting and hard working year!

    Best wishes,
    The Year 4 Team
